Reckless Driving

In Virginia, an automobile is a necessity. Many times, it can be tempting to disregard speed limits as we rush to get home or when it seems like no one else is on the road. However, driving too fast can result in far more than a simple traffic ticket. If you are engaging in excessive speeding, you may be charged with reckless driving, or a misdemeanor criminal traffic offense.

At The Law Office of C.W. Roop, PLLC, we caution clients of the importance of acting quickly if you are charged with reckless driving. Typically, there is only a 10-day appeal period, so contacting a seasoned and dedicated lawyer can make all the difference. If you need your driving citations resolved immediately, call us at 276-352-4172 to make an appointment.

What Is Reckless Driving?

In our state, reckless driving is defined as driving a motor vehicle at a speed greater than 20 mph over the limit, or at a speed greater than 80 mph, regardless of the speed limit. This charge can have potentially serious consequences if the maximum penalties are enacted, including:

  • A 12-month jail sentence

  • A $2,500 fine

  • A six-month suspension of your driver's license

  • Six points added to your DMV record

These penalties are usually coupled with an insurance premium hike, as well.

For those passing through our state, it's important to know that a reckless driving charge can follow you home. You will still be liable for your Virginia citation, and you may possibly even face greater consequences for any missed responses or court dates.
